Algorithm Development. Whether you are building a major CAD package or simply need a better way to handle complex spreadsheets, success begins with concise algorithms.
Complex Database design. Commercial database compilers are written for business and other nontechnical applications, and consequently fall short of usefulness for producing a concise relational base for complex scientific data. Some even lack the capacity to deal with double precision floating point numbers. Complex scientific relational databases are often best custom written.
Data Reduction/Analysis. Commercial statistical packages are often sluggish due to size or difficult to use because of poor documentation and outdated user interfaces. For specific solutions, custom development is usually superior.
Mathematical Modeling. Cutting edge research often involves development of concise descriptive or theoretical models. The art of mathematical modeling draws heavily on experience, which is rare in the software development field.
Process Simulation. Few good general simulation packages are available at a reasonable cost, and the complexity of many problems can only be addressed with custom software.
